£1k Boot Camp Provides Advice and Inspiration
Submitted by Tom Craig on Fri, 24/11/2023 - 10:02.On 23 November 2006, CUE held the £1k Boot camp to provide practical advice on writing winning summaries for the £1k Business Ideas Competition. Over 150 people packed the lecture theatre to hear from distinguished guest speakers including James Hay, co-founder of previous winner Splashpower, and Walter Herriot OBE, Managing Director of the St John's Innovation Centre. A lively networking session followed, helping potential entrants to find teams.
CUE has made available via its web site both a video comprising highlights of the £1k Boot Camp and a short description of the structure and content of an executive summary. The deadline for entering the £1k Business Ideas Competition is midnight on 11 December 2006.
CUE £1k Boot Camp

This event will be a great opportunity for those interested in the £1k Business Ideas Competition to learn how to write a winning executive summary and how to excel in this year's competition, as well as find potential ideas and team members in the networking session which follows. Everyone who is interested in entering, whether or not you have an idea, should attend! Please save the date for the £1k Boot Camp. Come and listen to James Hay, Co-founder of Splashpower and Walter Herriot, Director of St. John's Innovation Center. James Hay entered and won the CUE business creation competition in 2001. Splashpower were the first winner of the CUE competitions to attract venture capital. In January 2004, Splashpower announced the completion of their second VC funding round with Benchmark Capital investing $5.4 million.

Previous winners include Owlstone Nanotech, Splashpower and Light Blue Optics.
The 3P (People, Planet, Productivity) Business Creation Competition rewards propositions which focus on creating social or environmental benefits. These businesses may be either for profit or not for profit. Previous winners include Enval and Aptivate.
