CUE alumnus Light Blue Optics (LBO) announced on 1 October 2023 that they have secured $26m (£13m) of Series 'A' funding. LBO won the CUE £50k Business Plan Competition in 2003/04. The company has developed and patented holographic laser projection technology that can display full-colour, high-quality video images on any flat or curved surface.

The $26m investment is "one of the most significant European Series ‘A’ investments in the last five years", claims Stephen Lowery, director of 3i, who led LBO's $3.5m seed-funding round. LBO CEO, Dr Chris Harris, said the funding "will allow us to accelerate our product development and commercialisation programme towards the high-volume manufacture of miniature projection systems".
